1:07 – How good are US politicians at investing?
In Reddit, a guy named nobjobs found that US congress members were outperforming S&P500 by 6%. However, their trades had about average 52 days of delay before reporting. But even with that, if you follow their trades, you would still get similar returns. Obviously not all trades are good trades. Most of the popular stocks are tech stocks.
I analyzed 9000+ trades made by U.S Congress Members in the last two years and benchmarked it against S&P500. Here are the results. from wallstreetbets
5:01 – Insider trading??
Some people suspect that they are doing insider trading. In 2012, Obama passed Stock Act which requires lawmakers and senior staff to report their trades within 45 days of transaction. However, many of them didn’t follow this rule.
In 2020, a few congress members sold their stocks before the March 2020 crash, after attending a closed door meeting about the pandemic. David Perdue managed to save over $2.2M by doing so. However no one was found to be guilty.

I feel politicians are confident in their investments because they have knowledge which no one else has. And their actions can directly the stock performance. And since it’s not illegal for them to do so, we can try to follow their trades and benefit together.
However, don’t follow blindly, make sure the companies have good fundamentals before you invest.
