Alabama and Georgia are set to face off for the second time this season, after both the Crimson Tide and Bulldogs pulled off convincing wins in their respective national semifinal games yesterday. Bama cruised to a 27-6 win over G5 Cincinnati, and Georgia not only pulled off an upset in terms of rankings- they were number 3 and Michigan was number 2, but they left no doubt whatsoever that they were the better team. Keep in mind Georgia had been ranked number 1 for the majority of the season, until they were knocked off by Alabama in the SEC Title game.
And that brings us to our rematch: This will actually be the second time that these two schools will face off in the National Championship in the CFP era, the first coming in January of 2018, when Alabama again defeated Georgia by a score of 26-23.
As for their prior meeting this year, Georgia came in as the favorites, and got off to a good start, but then proceeded to get routed by the eventual Heisman Trophy Winner Bryce Young and the Alabama offense, which scored by far the most points against that stout Georgia defense all season long.
To my surprise, Georgia actually comes into this one at minus 2 and a half as well, with a 58% chance to win it all, according to ESPN’s Football Power Index.
Yes, the Bulldogs defense looked great again against Michigan last night, but now they’re going up against their kryptonite Alabama– which to be fair, is most every teams kryptonite, but that doesn’t change the fact that Georgia had absolutely no answers for the Alabama offense down in Atlanta during the SEC Championship game. While I don’t think this game will be as widespread of a margin of victory, I DO still see the Crimson Tide beating their SEC rival, and claiming their 4th championship in the CFP era. I can see this being a 28-21 type game, where Alabama just sort of stays one touchdown ahead the whole night. This is a proud Georgia defense, and they’re not gonna let Alabama put up 40 on them again, but I do think that Nick Saban and the Tide do enough to take home the victory, behind a strong game from Heisman winner Bryce Young and his talented group of wideouts.
