The very first car was invented in 1886 by German auto maker Carl Benz. By 1913, the famous Ford Model T was being mass produced. These novel machines offered an alternative to the slow and often exhausting travel associated with horse and carriage transportation. For the entire first half of the 20th century, manual transmissions were the only options available to drivers. Automatic transmission didn’t hit the driving scene until midcentury, when General Motors released the 1948 Oldsmobile. The engineer responsible for the clever invention, Earl Thompson, claimed it was “the greatest advance since the self-starter.” Now, in modern times, manual transmissions are the rarity, with automatic transmission vehicle accounting for less than 2.5% of U.S. sales.
Though the vast majority of vehicles are now automatic, some people still prefer to drive a manual transmission. Shifting between gears allows these true roadsters to enjoy extra control on the road, allowing them to make decisions about pavement condition and speed. However, our current situation may leave many of these manual transmission fanatics feeling disappointed, as fewer than 15% of modern cars offer the option of manual transmission. Less than 3% of Carmax’s sold vehicles in 2020 were manual.
While this corner of the market has been all but written off by some automakers in recent years, there are still over two dozen late-model vehicles available with standard transmission. Using data from the EPA and U.S. Department of Energy, 24/7 Wall St. identified the manual cars and trucks you can still buy. The 35 vehicles on this list are ordered alphabetically by make and model. Base price estimates for the models are as reported by Car and Driver. All other supplemental data is from the EPA and DOE.
Standard transmission vehicles are especially popular with enthusiasts, and not surprisingly, many of the cars on this list are geared toward that market. These include several BMW, Cadillac, and Porsche models.
While most of the cars here are high-end sport and luxury models, there are also several practical vehicles, many of which are affordable to a broader range of budgets. These include the Mitsubishi Mirage, the Nissan Versa, several Subaru models, and the Toyota Tacoma pickup.
Why Are We Writing About Cars with Manual Transmissions?
When buying a car, consumers are forced to make a choice: automatic or manual? Though automatic transmissions are more convenient, according to Edmunds, manual transmission cars do have their benefits. They are often less expensive than those with automatic transmissions, come with cheaper repairs, and maintain a higher resale value (on sports models). Beyond that, manual transmission enthusiasts prefer control over the gears and enjoy the engagement involved in shifting. In the end, it all comes down to personal preference. If you’re considering buying a car with a manual transmission, it’s best to do thorough research before purchasing.
